Guoco Midtown Set To Continue Rejuvenation Of The Ophir-Rochor-Beach Road Corridor

Developer GuocoLand has started work on its new Beach Road integrated development Guoco Midtown, which will comprise 770,000 sq ft of Grade A office space, 30,000 sq ft of retail and entertainment area and more than 200 residential units. It is set to be completed by early 2022. The former Beach Road Police Station, a conserved building, is a part of the development as well. Its full concept and design will be unveiled in the first half of 2019.

Guoco Midtown will be served by the East-West, Downtown, North-South and Circle MRT lines and linked via an underground passage to Bugis MRT interchange. Apart from connecting City Hall, Marina Centre and Bugis, Guoco Midtown will be served by major roads in the city centre and the Nicoll Highway, as will the North-South Highway in the future. It will also have unblocked views of Marina Bay, Kallang Basin, Orchard Road and the sea.

Neighbouring Shaw Tower has also expressed that they will go through redevelopment, motivated in part by its owner's hopes that the new building will open around the same time as Guoco Midtown, as part of the rejuvenation of the Ophir-Rochor corridor.

To that end, the 42 year-old Shaw Tower will likely be torn down and a new 35-storey grade A office and retail building completed in its place by 2023 with 400,000 sq ft of office space and 30,000 sq ft of retail space (subject to planning approval). Some 150 tenants have been given advance notice to relocate elsewhere on or before June 30, 2020.
